Area Competitions Produce Winners
for 2005 Writeoff at Cerritos College

Newspaper, Yearbook and PhotoJournalists will compete April 23

(Cerritos College - Norwalk, Calif.) -- More than 200 Southern California Journalists are expected to vie for state honors Saturday, April 23 at Cerritos College in the 54th Annual Southern California Journalism Education Association 2005 Writeoff Competition.High School newspaper journalists will write features, news, sports and editorial on-the-spot entries.

Each of the writers in these four fields will have prequalified for competition at writeoffs held through the southland in the past two months. Other high school newspaper staff members will compete in Critical Reviewing, News Page Layout and Editorial Cartooning, three areas where no area pre-qualification is required.

Junior high student contestants are welcome in both Critical Review and Editorial Cartooning events. Photo journalists will have a digital contest of their own in both news and general non-newss photo on-the-spot competitions.

Both high school and junior high school students may participate in these events. High School and junior high school yearbook team members will compete in two separate divisions for honors in layout, photo selection, copy and caption writing in a two-hour session.

Individual and team school awards will be given following lunch-hour activities on campus that same day.

Each year, Southern California journalism educators plan and conduct both state and area writeoffs for the benefit of their student journalists and photographers. The competitions are judged by area professionals.

More than 50 trophies and certificates will awarded April 23 and the high school with the most points accrued by individual staff members will be named 2005 SCJEA Writeoff Sweepstakes winner.
