The
Southern California Journalism Education Association is looking
for three graduating seniors to honor for their high school newspaper
and/or yearbook accomplishments with the following scholarship opportunities:
Ted
Tajima Award ($750)
Ted
Tajima was the Alhambra High School adviser for 35 years, a founder
and former president of SCJEA and instructor to many current professional
journalists. In addition, he served as JEA national vice-president.
The Moor, then a weekly newspaper, was a perennial NSPA
All-American. Tajima was a mentor to many high school advisers.
He is retired and lives in Altadena.
Carol
Hallenbeck Award ($500)
Carol
Hallenback advised the award-winning Accolade at Sunny Hills High
School (Fullerton) for 20 years. She was a frequent speaker at
state and national conventions and co-editor of Practical Ideas
for Teaching Journalism. She was a leader in Orange County
JEA and SCJEA. In her retirement she loves to travel and is docent
at the Santa Ana Bowers Museum.
Betty
Rogers Memorial Scholarship ($250)
Betty
Rogers was the adviser to the Bell Gardens High School Lancer
Scroll. For many years she was the link to Southern California
newspaper and yearbook advisers because she served as treasurer
for SCJEA, handling dues, tracking registration and being a faithful
supporter of scholastic journalism.
To
qualify for SCJEA scholarships, a high school senior must have served
at least one year on a publication staff and completed the application
requirements. The high school must be an SCJEA
member at the time of application for the student to qualify
